Cancer is one disease that can be prevented with the right foods. If you want to keep cancer at bay then you need to eat healthy.  Researchers at the American Institute for Cancer Research have estimated that approximately one-third of the total 1.4 million cancers occurring annually in the United States may be preventable in part, through healthier food choices.  Some of the healthy options of cancer fighting foods include:


Berries are colorful and sweet and are available in plenty in the summer. Berries are a great Vitamin C source and also contain a number of antioxidants. Antioxidants work at protecting cells in the body from damage that may cause skin cancer, lung cancer, cancers of the bladder, breast cancer as well as cancer of the esophagus.


Grapes are irresistibly sweet and juicy and it does not end there. Grapes have a large amount of packed resveratrol, an antioxidant that fights cancer.  Research has shown that resveratrol can potentially stop formation of cancer cells in the liver, breast, lymphatic system and the stomach.

The skin on the grapes contains the largest amount of resveratrol so you should eat the entire grape; skin and all. Purple and red grapes have significantly larger quantities of resveratrol compared to green grapes.


Broccoli does not have to have a bad taste, the florets take up the flavor of any sauce or spice you cook them in. Broccoli belongs to the family of cruciferous vegetable along with kale, bokchoy, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, and cauliflower. Studies have shown that broccoli along with its family members are cancer fighting foods that contain special compounds that are capable of protecting the body from cancers of the stomach, pharynx esophagus, larynx, pharynx as well as the mouth.


The red color of tomato is from the antioxidant known as lycopene. Research has shown that lycopene possesses properties that can potentially fight prostate cancer. This has been evidenced even further in processed tomato products including ketchup and tomato sauce. Processing tomatoes increases its power to fight cancer because lycopene is released making it easier to absorb in the body.

Whole grains

Whole grains are a good source of fiber. However, not all grains are able to fight cancer; only whole grains contain the necessary elements. Whole grains are packed with fiber, minerals, vitamins as well as natural plant compounds.

As an added advantage, the fiber in whole grains gives you a satiated feeling, you feel full for longer, maintain a weight that is healthy, and keep blood sugar and your cholesterol levels normal. When cooking grains, select brown over white, this includes wild rice, brown rice, and whole wheat bread. You can try preparing a quinoa recipe.  Of all the available cancer fighting foods, quinoa packs has the highest amount of protein. You can also add oatmeal to your smoothies to have extra grains.
