Watch your language!

Some terms and phrases, such as "lay midwife,"  have out-dated or unfortunate connotations for many people. Practice using terms and phrases that move midwifery forward.

Join your local chapter of Ohio Families for Safe Birth.

If your community does not have a chapter yet, contact us about getting one started!

Know your legislators.

At this time, legislation regulating direct-entry midwifery has not yet been introduced for the upcoming session. This is the perfect time to establish a relationship with your senator or representative. Write a letter or pay a visit, maybe even spend some time volunteering in his or her office. This time investment now will be extremely valuable later, when you are seeking your legislator's support for midwifery legislation.

To find out who your local representatives are, visit this page for the Ohio state government and enter your zip code.

Pay attention to your local press.

When an article on birth- or midwifery-related issues appears, respond with a letter to the editor or an op-ed. If you are part of a local group, let the community paper know about your group's events.
